ELENA JOTA
Elena Jota is a Spanish visual artist and community workshop facilitator based in Galway. Her multidisciplinary practice includes painting, illustration, comics, and animation, exploring themes of self-awareness, women's perspectives, menstruality and social justice.
I believe in art as a tool for social transformation and resistance. Painting about the genocide happening against Palestinian people helps me process grief and express solidarity.
"Create to resist
Create to paint alternatives,
not to build new hierarchies.
Create to find the way out of the labyrinth,
not to build more walls,
not to set more lockers,
not to tick the boxes.
Not to feed the egos master
Create to decolonize it all.
Decolonize your throat, your womb,
your love.
Create to decolonize creativity.
Create to resist.
Create to be mature, to be kind, to protect joy
Create as a compass, not as a product.
Create to transform, not to perpetuate oppression
Create to resist
Create in the dark.
Create for the craic.
Create to let the light come through the cracks"
